Northamptonshire Chamber joins national campaign calling for school leavers to be better prepared for the workplace

Chamber president Kevin Shapland – along with representatives of the other accredited chambers of commerce – has countersigned the letters that the British Chambers of Commerce have sent to the new Trade Minister and Secretaries of State for Education and Business.

The letters congratulate the new post holders and ask for their attention on the Chamber network’s campaign to address the issue raised by Chamber members that school leavers and graduates are unprepared for the workplace.

The ministers are asked to increase collaboration between education providers and businesses, support young people in gaining the skills needed to transition to work and develop effective policies to bridge the gap.

The letters also ask the ministers to “keep international trade at the heart of the government’s plan for action” and “secure the enhanced financial resources required to deliver a long-term UK export drive”.

Northamptonshire Chamber Chief Executive Paul Griffiths has also personally written to the seven returning and newly elected MPs in Northamptonshire, to encourage them to continue to work closely with the Chamber to build stronger links with members and lobby on their behalf.

Paul said: “With the incoming government taking shape, it’s now time to shift the emphasis back on reviving the economy.

“It is very important that we forge strong relationships with the new cabinet so we can continue to work together to create the best possible economic environment for all.”
