A farmers' market is back up and running with special measures in place to protect customers and traders.

The Higham Ferrers farmers' market is hugely popular and usually has more than 20 stalls selling a wealth of local produce on the last Saturday of the month.

But as the country went into lockdown in March, organisers decided to cancel the event planned for March 28.

They said at the time they would review the April market and after it went well, this month's market will also be going ahead.

A spokesman for Higham Ferrers Town Council said: "Following the suspension of the farmers’ market in March and some negativity at the plans to hold the April market, the council were delighted with the positive feedback by both traders and residents.

"The aim was to support the traders, but also provide an alternative source of fresh food.

"Six food stalls attended the market instead of the usual 20 to 24 and strict social distancing measures were put in place, including manned entrances and exits to the market.

"The next market will be 30 May between 9am and 1pm.

"Again, this will have a limited number of stalls and social distancing measures in place.

"The council asks that where possible visits are by one individual from a household.

"Pre-orders can be made from the stallholders for collection on the day."
