New Kettering discount shop promises to pile it up and sell it cheap

A new 'cash and carry style' shop is promising bargains galore when it opens in Kettering's town centre later this month.

D&J Discount Store will open in Gold Street on August 22 in the old M&Co unit, which has been empty for more than a year.

It's the brainchild of popular butcher Jamie Cooper, from Jamie's in the unit next door, and caterer Darren Garley from Kettering-based Garley Catering.

Jamie said: "We're going to pile it up and sell it cheap. Our rivals will be Home Bargains and B&M but I don't think they will be able to compete with the prices we have.

"It's basically going to be like a wholesaler that's open to the public."

Business at Jamie's has been booming through the Covid pandemic but with bookings and events postponed until next year Darren's business has slowed down, so he has been helping Jamie with internet orders and bookings.

They had a chat about businesses needing to clear stock and did some research before clearing 20 pallets of Tyrrells crisps in just a few weeks.

Now they will be selling a range of items at knockdown prices including washing powder, crisps, chocolate, drinks, dog biscuits and more with stock changing on a regular basis.

Jamie said: "We found out there's a few people in the country doing it but nowhere really near us.

"We know we can clear stock and in doing that there will be less wastage and families will save money."

Items will be priced as low as £1 for eight quilted loo rolls and £1.50 for a 10-pack of Capri Sun. There will also be a collection point at the rear of the store.

The shop will be open seven days a week and will initially create six jobs, with the potential of more as the shop expands. Signs will go up above the door later this week.

Jamie and Darren will start by filling half of the huge unit before putting more stock on the shop floor over time.

Jamie added: "The unit has been empty for a long time and we're bringing something to the high street to fill it.

"This is going to bring more people into the area. People are going to come in and think they are in a cash and carry."
