Corby's Company Shop has extended its membership to people in receipt of means tested benefits.

The store, which is part of Company Shop Group, stops some of the UK’s favourite household brands and supermarket products from going to waste by redistributing surplus stock to its members at discounted prices.

This means that members can purchase food from Waitrose, Tesco, Nestle and others at deeply discounted prices.

All the food is in date, and perfectly good to eat, but might have otherwise gone to waste due to issues like wonky labelling, misspelling on packaging, or surplus ordering.

Membership is usually only open to those people working in food and drink manufacturing, the emergency services or the NHS and Social Care.

However, due to the pandemic and rising unemployment, Company Shop Corby has actively extended its free membership to people in receipt of means tested benefits, in order to provide additional support for the local community.

The group already offers food access and support to thousands of households on means tested benefits as part of its social supermarket network, and this initiative is an extension of that provision.

It is hoped that the significant discounts available will help family budgets stretch further during challenging times.

Membership lasts a lifetime and is free.

Company Shop Group has also temporarily extended membership to many of the UK’s key workers, including teachers and council staff.

Sally Wake, commercial director at Company Shop Group, said: “By extending free membership to people in receipt of welfare support, we will be able to help even more families to stretch their budgets further during these challenging times.

"We would like to thank our food manufacturing and retail partners for their support in making this happen.”

To help bolster the positive social impact generated as a result of Company Shop’s membership extension, the group is calling on local food businesses across the region with surplus stock to come forward, so that they can work together to provide a sustainable solution which will generate positive social, economic and environmental benefits.

Membership to Company Shop Corby is free and eligible people can sign up via https://www.companyshopgroup.co.uk/apply-for-membership/company-shop.
