Column: Classical Notes

The vocal talents of Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan are far from Australia’s only musical exports.

And a concert at St Matthew’s Church in The Drive, Northampton, next week will prove that fact when a choir known as The Australian Voices – dubbed as one of the world’s leading choral groups – perform.

Having completed a 23-night residency at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Australian Voices are currently embarking on an 80-night national UK tour.

The group, which contains singers selected from all over Australia, have performed alongside some big names in classical music, such as Evelyn Glennie who recently led the percussionists at the London 2012 opening ceremony. Jose Carreras is another big star to have performed with the choir.

Directed by Gordon Hamilton, the choir performs choral classics ranging from Mozart and Bach to Bruckner and Rachmaninov, with a touch of didgeridoo rhythms, jazz and Indian drumming.

The concert will be performed on October 18, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £12 or £6, available on the door.

But St Matthew’s is not the only church hosting a concert in the coming week as this Saturday, October 13, the Holy Trinity Church in Rothwell will host a performance by the prize-winning Rushden Windmill Band.
