A bridge near Burton Latimer will close for almost two weeks after cracks appeared in the pavement - less than a year after it was rebuilt.

The Station Road bridge, linking the west of Burton Latimer with the A509 and Isham, only re-opened in November after it was demolished and built at a raised height as part of the Midland Main Line upgrade in a lengthy closure.

But on Monday (October 12) it will close again so Network Rail engineers can carry out work to repair the pavement after cracks appeared due to the summer's scorching weather.

Improvements are also being made to the drainage on the bridge to make sure water runs away from the railway.

Gavin Crook, principal programme sponsor for Network Rail, said: “This work to improve the pavement and the drainage on Station Road bridge is vital so drivers, cyclists and pedestrians can continue using it for years to come.

“These improvements can only be carried out safely when the road is closed, and we would like to apologise to residents and businesses in Isham for any inconvenience.”

This work will not impact on train services, but Station Road will be closed to drivers at the bridge to allow the improvements to take place safely.

Station Road will be closed to motorists from 9am on Monday until 6pm on Friday, October 23. A signed diversion will be in place.

Access over the bridge will be maintained for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists.

Once the road re-opens, teams will remain on site until December.

A Network Rail spokesman said they are working to keep disruption to a minimum for people who live near the railway.
