Northamptonshire spring clean sees 1,500 bags of rubbish removed from A14 verges

The equivalent of 1,560 bags of rubbish was cleared from the A14 in Northamptonshire in a 10-day spring clean.

North Northamptonshire Council collected the rubbish from verges on the side of the major road, as well as 21 lorry tyres, three car tyres and various road signs.

Starting on May 14, the council introduced one-lane overnight closures on sections of the A14 from the Huntingdonshire border, past Thrapston and along towards Kettering to collect the rubbish.

Cllr Harriet Pentland, the council’s executive member for climate and green environment, said: “I know from my many conversations with local residents that none of us like to see litter strewn along our major and rural roads. It harms the environment and looks unsightly.

“I continue to appeal to drivers not to allow litter to be thrown from your vehicle.

"It is an offence and detracts from the beauty of our area. Littering our roads also endangers the lives of our staff who carry out the litter picks at the taxpayers’ expense.

“Please keep your litter in your vehicle and place it in a bin when you arrive at your destination.”
