As well as removing the catalytic converter they took two oxygen sensors and the middle exhaust from a silver Honda Jazz, police said:

Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting reference number 20000 594516.

The number of catalytic converter thefts in the county has soared in recent years, with 295 in one 12-month period alone.

The converters, which control and convert emissions, contain precious metals such as rhodium and palladium, which can be stripped out and sold.

Hybrid cars are a particular high-value target because they produce lower emissions, meaning the metals are less corroded.

Often working in groups callous thieves jack up a vehicle, cut out the device and flee within minutes, leaving their victims with a huge bill to get their car back on the road.
