Acclaimed storyteller, Dominic Kelly, will lead his audience through an audacious tale of deceit at the Black Bottom Club in George Row, Northampton, tonight.
The Trickster is the latest of the Royal & Derngate’s collaborations with storytelling specialists, The Crick Crack Club.
The story follows the antics of John Henry Williams, loosely based on the infamous imposter and criminal, Percy Toplis, ‘The Monocled Mutineer’.
Kelly uses trickster tales and motifs from Norway and Africa, as well as Middle Eastern folk tales, to create a mysterious anti-hero, admirable for his unbridled ingenuity and cheek.
Dominic is a world-renowned storyteller, born in Kayseri, Turkey – a town famous for its wealth of trickster folk tales – but he traces his passion for stories and legends to the rugged beauty of the Cumbrian countryside, where he grew up with a love of reading, and the freedom to explore the mountains.
The Times called his performance ‘compelling, funny and heartbreaking’.
The show will be performed at 8pm. Tickets cost £9.50. Call 01604 624811 or visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk. Recommended for those aged 18 and over.
