The acclaimed Richard Alston Dance Company returns to the royal & Derngate in Northampton performing threee pieces from its rich repertoire.
A highlight of the programme is Richard Alston’s most recent work Rejoice in the Lamb, danced to Benjamin Britten’s setting of Christopher Smart’s poetry, a piece of music originally commissioned by the Church of St Matthew’s in Northampton.
The company is also reviving his classic Overdrive, an exhilarating blast of nonstop dance to the pulsating rhythms of Californian minimalist Terry Riley. The ten dancers ride seamlessly across Riley’s relentless patterning, in an intricate combination of movement and sound. Overdrive is one of 12 prescribed professional works for GCSE Dance on the AQA syllabus.
Richard Alston Dance Company takes to the Derngate stage on Tuesday, September 30, and Wednesday, October 1, at 7.30pm.
Tickets – priced at £13, £20 and £23 – can be booked by calling 01604 624811 or online at www.royalandderngate.co.uk. There is also a pre-show talk at 6pm before Tuesday’s performance.
