Hairspray brings its touring show to town

The story of a girl with big hair and an even bigger heart will be told next week when the touring musical Hairspray is staged at Milton Keynes Theatre.

It’s 1962, the ’50s are out and change is in the air. Tracy Turnblad has one passion...dancing.

She wins a spot on the local television dance programme, The Corny Collins Show, and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity.

But can Tracy coax her massively shy mother out of the apartment, beat evil Amber to be crowned Miss Hairspray, integrate Corny’s show for good and win over heartthrob Link Larkin, all without denting her super-high hair-do?

The cast is led by stage and screen star Mark Benton as larger-than-life Edna Turnblad, former EastEnders star Lucy Benjamin as the scheming TV executive Velma Von Tussle and X Factor finalist Marcus Collins as too cool for school Seaweed Stubbs.

They are joined by newcomer Freya Sutton as teen heroine Tracy Turnblad and original West End cast member Sandra Marvin as Motormouth Maybelle.

Hairspray opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre, London, in 2007 and has since gone on to win more than 40 major theatrical awards including Best musical at the 2008 Olivier Awards.

Performances at Milton Keynes Theatre will run from Monday, April 1 to Saturday, April 6.

Evening performances start at 7.30pm and there will also be a 2.30pm matinee on the Wednesday and Saturday. Ticket prices range from £15 to £45.
