A nostalgic Blitz-time musical, offering “feel-good fun” comes to Northampton’s Royal & Derngate this week.
Radio Times, by Noel Gay, can be seen at the theatre from Tuesday to Saturday, September 22, starring top musical theatre performer, Gary Wilmot.
The show tells the tale of the BBC’s light-entertainment wireless show, Variety Bandwagon, as they prepare to do their bit for the war effort.
With half the cast missing, an officious producer and no script, a live broadcast to America seems doomed to fail until star of the show, Sammy Shaw, arrives with minutes to spare, a script and Hollywood movie star, Gary Strong.
Can the cast deliver a show that will win the hearts of the American people? And can Sammy hang on to girlfriend Olive’s love with old flame Gary back on the scene?
Radio Times features many well-known songs, including Run Rabbit Run, Hey Little Hen and Whose Been Polishing the Sun. West End star Gary Wilmot – from musicals such as Chicago, Half A Sixpence, Copacabana and Me And My Girl – heads the cast alongside actress Sara Crowe, who has been seen in Private Lives in London and the film Four Weddings And Funeral. In this Watermill Theatre production, they are joined by a company of The Watermill’s trademark actor-musicians, who play more than 15 instruments. They sing and dance too.
Radio Times can be seen at Royal & Derngate at 7.45pm each evening, with matinees on Thursday and Saturday at 2.30pm. To book tickets – priced from £10 to £26.50 – call the Box Office on 01604 624811 or visit the website www. royalandderngate.co.uk
