Birdsong brought to life at Royal & Derngate

Sebastian Faulks’ acclaimed novel, Birdsong, will be brought to the Royal & Derngate stage in Northampton next week.

Former Hollyoaks actress Sarah Jayne Dunn will star as Isabelle Azaire alongside Jonathan Smith as Stephen Wraysford in this turbulent tale of love and war.

In pre-war France, young Englishman Stephen embarks on a passionate affair with his host’s wife, Isabelle.

As civil unrest mounts and war breaks in on the idyll of his former life, Stephen finds he must now lead his men through the carnage of the Battle of the Somme and the sprawling tunnels that lie deep underground. Faced with unprecedented horror, the war-hardened Stephen clings to the shrinking memory of Isabelle as his world explodes around him.

Birdsong was ranked 13th in the 2003 BBC survey, The Big Read, finding the nation’s favourite book. The novel was adapted for the stage by Rachel Wagstaff and opened at the Comedy Theatre, in London, in 2010.

Birdsong will run from Monday, May 13 to Saturday, May 18, at 7.45pm nightly, with 2.30pm matinees on the Thursday and Saturday. Tickets cost £9.50 to £25.50. Call 01604 624811 or visit
