I heard it said once that people who claim they never hear classically composed music any more probably never go to the cinema.
Listening to orchestral works may not be exactly trendy, but pay attention to the background music in many old-time favourite and new movies and one will hear evidence of deft composition.
Some of these themes even go on to become much-loved classics in their own right. Just think of Chariots of Fire.
This music will be celebrated next week in Milton Keynes City Orchestra’s A Night At The Movies, which will be held at Milton Keynes Theatre on Friday, June 7 at 7.30pm.
Performances will include music from James Bond, Schindler’s List, Gone With The Wind, Pirates Of The Caribbean and Star Wars. Tickets will cost £12.90-£35.90. To book, see www.atgtickets.com.
This spring and summer, Abington Park in Northampton has become the place to hear some of the best local brass bands. Bands performing in the park will include Bedford Town Band this Sunday and Kidlington Town Band on Sunday, June 9.
Lastly, another mention for this Saturday’s concert at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in Sheep Street, Northampton. At 7.30pm there will be a performance by UK National Champion youth band, Youth Brass 2000, who were last year named BBC Radio 2’s Youth Band of the Year. Admission is £10 or £5 for under 16s.
