The show forms part of the theatre’s 2016 Made in Northampton season this summer. Auditions will take place at the theatre on Thursday.

The theatre is looking for people aged over 18 with a strong singing voice and is particularly keen to hear from members of the Afro-Caribbean community. The choir will consist of 12 to 15 members, with a couple of singers covering each vocal part so that they can alternate performances.

Revealing what really happened during Marvin Gaye’s haunting final days, Soul is a parable about an American family prepared to do anything to promote and protect their children – a searing portrait of the pitfalls of the American dream.

Written by BAFTA and Evening Standard Award-winning Roy Williams OBE (Sucker Punch, Days Of Significance) in close collaboration with members of the family of Marvin Gaye, Soul is a dramatic thriller about one of the most influential musicians of our time.

The show will be directed by Royal & Derngate’s Artistic Director James Dacre whose recent productions include The Herbal Bed, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and the world premiere of Arthur Miller’s The Hook.

There will be a group audition at the theatre for prospective new choir members from 7.30pm till 8pm on Thursday.

Initial choir rehearsals will be on the evenings of Thursday 21 and 28 April, and then there will be rehearsals with the professional cast on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for the following two weeks.

The choir will also be needed at the tech week rehearsals daytime and evenings from Wednesday 18 to Friday 20 May. The plays runs from Friday 20 May to Saturday 11 June. There will be a rota so not every singer will be required for every performance.

To register for the auditions, download a form from the theatre’s website www.royalandderngate.co.uk (on the Soul page in the What’s On section) and email it to [email protected]. The website also gives more details about the commitment involved.
