The Big Dirty have recorded a special version of the 1985 hit from The Snowman, Walking In The Air.

The Northants rockers had been asked by the magazine Emerging Rock Bands to do a Christmas cover as part of a Zoom party they had been invited to take part in.

Singer Johnny Rocket said: “We had previously asked our fans on social media, as a bit of a joke, to suggest some ridiculous song ideas we should cover. Walking In The Air was one of them.

“We never really intended to do it until we were invited to do ERB’s Christmas Zoom party and they requested a Christmas cover for it. It seemed like the obvious choice.”

Despite a turbulent year for musicians because of the coronavirus, The Big Dirty released their debut album The Sex in July.

The album received rave reviews from numerous rock publications.

Rocket is joined in The Big Dirty by bassist and backing singer JC, lead guitarist C-Diddy and drummer T-Dog.

The band is influenced by 1970s and 1980s glam and hard rock.

Rocket added: “It’s a first for us. We always do something special at Christmas.

“The reaction has been overwhelming. We didn't really think too much about it, people have been praising it beyond what we could have hoped and it's so appreciated - especially as it's so far removed from our usual style and sound.”

Last year, the band sent fans postcards and this year organised a ‘Dirty Santa’ competition for fans.

Looking to 2021, Rocket said “fingers crossed” it would be a big one for the band.

He said: “I think it will be a big one, finger’s crossed.

“This year, despite the pandemic, things have gone from strength to strength.

“We've had a lot of industry interest and our following has grown substantially since we released our album.

“We are currently writing the next EP and should have new music very soon.

“Definitely watch this space. Four middle aged, balding men wearing their wife’s clothes are coming your way.”
