Wales boss Warren Gatland wants an ‘X factor’ performance from George North on Friday night - after stating the Saints wing hasn’t been playing well for his country.

North had been warned by Gatland that his place in the starting line-up for this week’s Six Nations clash with England was under threat.

Scarlets wide man Liam Williams impressed in North’s absence in the final autumn international against South Africa, which Wales won 12-6.

But the Northampton man regains his place for the huge match-up at the Millennium Stadium and will be keen to show he can reproduce his club form for his country.

“George North’s non selection for South Africa was down to injury,” Gatland told Wales Online.

“We don’t feel he’s played well for Wales but he continues to score tries and he does that for his club too.

“We’re looking for X factor from him on Friday night.

“We’re looking for George to get a lot of touches and if his work rate his high he will create something. We’re giving him that opportunity.

“He knows what the expectations are on Friday.”
