Talks ongoing over deal to keep Howe

Rene Howe has reopened talks over extending his loan spell at Rushden & Diamonds.

The former Kettering Town striker looks likely to remain with Justin

Edinburgh's squad until the end of the Blue Square Bet Premier season.

Howe has got eight goals for Diamonds since moving from Peterborough

United.

Chairman Gary Calder will allow Edinburgh to add signings during next month's transfer window but keeping hold of Howe remains one of their

priorities.

The Diamonds boss said: "Talks are ongoing but we've already made it clear that we want him to stay here.

"Of course, everything has taken a back seat over the last week because of what happened to Dale Roberts.

"However we are trying to put the plans in place and get everything sorted.

"I've started to prepare for January – although it's difficult not knowing whether clubs might hold on to players because of the backlog of fixtures."

Meanwhile, a series of postponements mean that former Peterborough player Jamie Day is still waiting to complete his three-match ban for a

red card against York City on November 20.

Edinburgh added: "He has been training with the rest of the group and, hopefully, he will be back in action sooner rather than later because it has been one of the longest suspensions in history!"

Diamonds are hoping to face Luton Town at Nene Park on Boxing Day – weather permitting.

The FA Carlsberg Trophy first-round replay at Eastwood Town will be played on January 11 but league games against Hayes & Yeading, Cambridge United and Eastbourne Borough must be rearranged.

Edinburgh said: "Over the last two years we've had a few games called off but nothing to this degree and I've never known the weather so severe. At least we are not the only ones having difficulties."
