Samoa star Pisi happy to play provider at Saints

Pisi dived in for a try against Gloucester last week, finishing off a fine move that included an expertly-weighted chip from fly-half Stephen Myler.

That score put the Samoan centre one up in his battle to grab more tries than brother Ken at Saints this season.

But Pisi, who scored 10 tries last season, maintains he bases his game more on assists than being the man who crosses the whitewash.

“I sometimes tell him (Ken) that I’m on top in tries at the moment but I’m more about the assists,” said the typically smiley Samoan.

“I’m like a Scottie Pippen or Michael Jordan, giving it to guys like Ken and getting them over the tryline.

“Last season, I was in the right place at the right time for a few tries, which was good. I enjoy scoring tries and hopefully I can do the same this year.”

Saints smashed Gloucester at Franklin’s Gardens last Friday, with Pisi’s score one of eight registered by the home side in a 53-6 thrashing.

But the 28-year-old insists there is still plenty more to come from Jim Mallinder’s men as they bid to back up last season’s title win.

“There’s a lot of improvements we can make,” said Pisi. “It’s gone past the stage of trying to get to know each other.

“As you could see from last Friday, we can read each other and we’re so used to playing with one another that the game flows a bit more.

“This year, it’s about trying to keep everyone fresh and keep everyone on fire really.”
