Saints wing wizard Elliott sets his sights on Quins

Wing wizard Jamie Elliott is nicknamed ‘The Future’ at Saints - but last weekend he showed he’s very much a player for the here and now.

Elliott has received plenty of pats on the back this week after producing a fine performance in the 10-9 Heineken Cup pool four win at Ulster last Saturday.

He made a stunning try-saving tackle on Ireland winger Tommy Bowe, which was a key reason behind Saints’ victory at Ravenhill.

And now the 20-year-old, who saw his start to the season blighted by a hamstring injury, is ready to halt the progress of English champions Harlequins at Franklin’s Gardens today (ko 3.15pm).

“They’re a good side, they’re playing pretty well and they chuck the ball about so we’re looking to do what we did at Ulster and get a big win at home,” said Elliott.

Saints showed real determination last weekend, turning the tables on Ulster after a 25-6 defeat to the Irish side at the Gardens eight days earlier.

And Elliott is now hoping that success can give his side the confidence to claim some big victories during the next few weeks.

“We got stuffed at home in front of our own crowd and it was very disappointing,” said the Saints Academy graduate.

“We came off the pitch saying ‘we’ve got to turn this around’, especially going to Ravenhill.

“It was good to go out there and get a win because it showed the punters and everyone else what we can do and it gives us a lot of confidence going into the Christmas period.”

It could all have been so different had Elliott not made that last-gasp tackle on Bowe, though.

And the diminutive No.11, said: “It was great to make that tackle because it picks everyone up and everyone’s happy after.

“Everyone said congratulations but it’s a team effort just to hold out.”
