Saints teenager Stephenson admits scoring his first Gardens try was ‘a dream’

The 19-year-old centre grabbed a sparkling second-half score to propel Northampton to a 39-13 Aviva Premiership victory against Gloucester.

It was Stephenson’s second try in as many games following on from his effort in the win at Newcastle, which was crowned Premiership try of the week.

And it was another impressive exhibition of the youngster’s talent, as he again demonstrated a dazzling sidestep to outwit Charlie Sharples on his way to the line.

Stephenson celebrated with a roar in front of the Burrda Stand, later claiming it was a dream come true.

“It’s a bit surreal, especially scoring here at Franklin’s Gardens,” he said. “It was awesome. As you could tell by my reaction when I scored, it’s awesome, a bit of a dream.”

But Stephenson admits he has even surprised himself with the two superb sidestepping scores in the past couple of weeks.

He said: “It’s funny because Ethan Waller said the past four years he’s played with me, he’s never seen me sidestep anyone.

“I don’t know where it’s come from really. It’s just a bit of confidence.

“Coming into a game like this and the ones in the past couple of weeks, you don’t want to go into your shell.

“You just want to back yourself and play how you normally play in the A League. I feel like I’ve done that in the past couple of weeks.”
