Saints star Foden glad to be back in England colours

Ben Foden admitted it was good to be back in England colours after grabbing two tries in the first game of their South America tour on Sunday.

The Saints full-back dotted down twice in the clash with the CONSUR XV in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo.

England claimed a convincing 41-21 victory, which was perfect preparation for two upcoming Test matches in Argentina.

And there were plenty of promising signs from Foden, who was playing for the Red Rose for the first time in 2013.

“This time last year was my last cap,” he said. “It’s nice to be scoring tries in an England shirt.

“I think that is first and foremost – it’s great to be running out wearing white representing my country.”

England, who have several Saints players in their squad, now head to Salta to face the Pumas on Sunday.

And despite the Montevideo success, Foden knows his team will have to sharpen up if they want to win the Test series.

“The team we played on Sunday were a passionate, dogged team,” he said. “They gave us a real fight at the breakdown and the scrum and they played a very tight, physical game – that is a taste of what is to come against the Argentinians.

“In games like this the referee is probably going to make something of a competition of it, but you’ve got to deal with that. We need to be squeaky clean over here.

“There’s a bit of a different interpretation of the scrum and breakdown and we need to manage that and communicate with the referee, so that when it comes to the Tests we know what we can and can’t get away with.”
