Ghaut, who was the club mascot at Twickenham in May, passed away on Tuesday after losing his battle with Osteosarcoma.

A minute’s applause took place at Franklin’s Gardens prior to kick-off on Saturday, with the Saints players wearing black armbands.

And after leading his side to an impressive 31-24 victory, Hartley took time to pay tribute to a 13-year-old who played a key role in last season’s successes.

“Luis was a great lad and he was part of our team,” said the captain. “It’s sad to lose one of our lads.

“I’m really proud of the lads in how we played with such a short turnaround and the emotional thoughts of Luis in the week. It was a lot to deal with.

“Some people were closer to him than others, but he was one of us.

“It was sad to see such a young lad go.

“All the lads are dedicating the win to him and the way and the manner in which we fronted up, we were emotionally charged.”
