Day was named Saints players’ player of the year at the club’s awards night on Monday.

The lock, who was treated to a video tribute of his lineout prowess, including jokey comments from team-mates, has been a key member of Northampton’s double bid this season.

And Dickson admits Saints would struggle without the 30-year-old, who has scored four tries in 31 appearances during this campaign.

“He is an unsung hero,” said England scrum-half Dickson. “He works very hard.

“I agree with what most of the lads said – he is a lineout nause and he takes it home with him as well, which is quite embarrassing.

“He’s been brilliant for us and he’s the reason why this team works like clockwork.

“He’s an organiser, an intelligent player and it’s not just the lineout because around the park he’s intelligent, he’s scored some tries and he’s big in defence as well.”
