The 22-year-old, who was part of the England Under-20 squad that lifted successive Junior World Championships in 2013 and 2014, was always highly rated at Franklin’s Gardens.

But he was unable to break into the team, with the Waller brothers, Alex and Ethan, keeping a tight hold of the Saints No.1 shirt.

He also had to contend with competition from British & Irish Lions star Alex Corbisiero in recent seasons and had been spending time with Greene King IPA Championship side Moseley in a bid to get some game time.

Hobbs-Awoyemi, who had played for Northampton Casuals and Wellingborough before joining the Saints Academy at the age of 16, made a total of four appearances for the club.

All of those were as a replacement, with three of them coming in the LV= Cup and one in the Amlin Challenge Cup.

And he will now look forward to moving on to pastures new, though he does not know what division he will be playing in next season, with London Irish currently bottom of the Aviva Premiership.

“I’m really looking forward to joining up with my new teammates in the summer,” said Hobbs-Awoyemi.

“I enjoyed my time with Northampton, and now I have a great opportunity to continue my development with London Irish.

“I can’t wait to get stuck in and show what I can do.”
