Saints have the edge over Saracens, says Day

And he’s hoping Northampton can secure their third successive victory against Mark McCall’s men this weekend.

Saints host Saracens on Saturday, with both teams vying for a victory that would secure a home semi-final in the LV= Cup.

Sarries will be eager to exact some revenge for their 41-20 drubbing by Saints in the Aviva Premiership encounter at the Gardens in October.

But, despite being wary of the threat the opposition will pose, Day feels his team have got the mental advantage ahead of the crunch clash.

“We’ve been talking about it all week, what a big game this is,” said the 20-year-old, who will start on the bench.

“Sarries have lost four games since last April and two of them have been to Saints.

“We’ve got that little edge over them, but Sarries are a top team, top of the Prem and we can’t take our foot off the gas.

“We’ve tended to win the physical battles recently, the gainline and defensively we’ve been pretty good.

“We’ve really upped the mental side of it and we know we’ve got to be on the money to beat Saracens.”

Day will hope for another happy Gardens experience, having scored two tries after coming off the bench in the most recent LV= Cup game there.

That 33-6 success set Saints on the way for three successive wins in Pool 4, and Day is keen to put in another big performance on Saturday.

“I’d love the same again,” he said. “It’s always a big game between Saints and Sarries, but, first and foremost, we’ve got to get the win. If everyone does their job, we’ll manage to do that.

“It was really nice to come off the bench and score twice against Gloucester.

“Both times it was down to the forwards’ hard work and I was just on the end of it, but it was nice to dot down a couple of times and hopefully I can do it again.”
