Saints fly-half Myler shrugs off late penalty heartbreak

Myler’s mammoth kick from inside his own half rebound off the crossbar as Northampton’s hopes of victory at stadium:mk rolled away.

The clock had gone dead and Saints needed the three points to win the game, but were left hurting after suffering a 17-16 reverse.

Myler, who had enjoyed a perfect day up to that point, was in philosophical mood in his post-match interview and says he couldn’t have done any more.

“I couldn’t really ask any more from myself,” said Myler. “I hit it as good as I possibly could and I guess it was just one of those things that wasn’t meant to be.

“It was my decision. It was a long way and I thought I had the range, but it proved to be the limit. Especially with those 20 seconds left on the clock, it was a case of now or never.

“I thought I could have had the legs if I hit it well, but unfortunately it proved to be a foot too short. That’s just the way it is.”

Saints now sit sixth in the Aviva Premiership standings with an away game against Exeter Chiefs on the horizon this Saturday.

Myler believes the gap between his side and their title rivals remains minimal but says Saints must start eradicating the errors that have blighted them.

“There’s fine margins between the top of the table and where we are now,” he said. “It’s such small margins that influence games.

“If that kick at the end goes over we’re all whooping and hollaring after the game but that’s just the way it is.

“We’ve got to concentrate on what we’re doing well, but we’ve also got to look at where we’re letting ourselves down and that’s our focus.”
