Saints end up with wooden spoon at World Club 7s

After winning just one of their three games on day one of the tournament, they were catapulted into the shield semi-final on Sunday.

The men in lime lost 21-0 to Kuban Krasnodar to leave them facing an 11th/12th place play-off against Western Province, which they lost 31-7.

It meant Saints ended up with the wooden spoon, just as they had at the recent JP Morgan 7s tournament at Franklin’s Gardens.

There was one positive on day two of the Twickenham event as Harry Mallinder, son of Saints boss Jim, got himself on the scoresheet with a try and a conversion.

But that was all the small group of travelling Northampton supporters had to shout about on an afternoon which saw the ACT Brumbies claim the main prize.

A day earlier, Northampton had lost to Buenos Aires and San Francisco before two tries from Tom Stephenson and one from Ollie Lyons ensured they would at least claim one victory from their sevens endeavours this summer.
