Boothroyd was sacked by Northampton Town last weekend, little more than two years after being appointed.

Mallinder, Boothroyd and Northants head coach David Ripley, who hail from Halifax, Baildon and Leeds respectively, formed a Yorkshire triumvirate in Northamptonshire sport.

But that was brought to an end by the football man’s departure last weekend, and Mallinder was disappointed to hear the news.

“I’m really sad for Aidy Boothroyd,” said the Saints director of rugby. “I don’t know the situation there and what’s happened but it’s difficult in professional sport.

“It’s all about winning, but I like Aidy, I think he’s done a fantastic job for the club, he’s a fantastic person.

“I’ve met him a few times, had some really good times and I’ll miss him but I wish him all the very best for the future. He’ll do well at another club.”
