Saint Wood glad to be with North rather than against him

Tom Wood says he is glad George North will be wreaking havoc alongside him rather than against him this season.

Wood has faced up to North on a number of occasions in recent years for both Saints and England.

His most recent meeting with the wing wizard was when England were systematically dismantled by Wales in a Six Nations match at the Millennium Stadium in March.

But Wood won’t have to worry about facing North - at least at club level - this season, with the 21-year-old wide man having moved to Franklin’s Gardens from Scarlets.

And the flanker said: “I’ve not worked with George before but I’ve played against him for the Scarlets and I’m glad he’s on our team because he’s caused all sorts of problems for the Scarlets against Northampton and Wales against England.

“We saw what he can do in the Lions shirt and it will be great to have him on our side rather than have to try to tackle him with those legs.”

North has been joined at Saints by fellow British & Irish Lions star Alex Corbisiero, who is a summer recruit from London Irish.

Wood knows all about the prop from his time with England and says he will help to make up for the loss of Soane Tonga’uiha and Brian Mujati, who have switched to Racing Metro.

“I’ve worked with Corbisiero a lot, I know what kind of character he is and he’s great fun to have around the camp,” said Wood.

“When you see him fully fit playing at international level, you know the class he’s got. To see him doing so well over there in Australia and to know he’s turning up for us really puts your mind at ease having lost two big players in the front row.”
