Wood: Saints can upset Saracens in Champions Cup

Sarries are the top seeds heading into the last eight, having won all six of their pool matches.

Saints qualified in eighth, taking one of three best runners-up spots after finishing second to Racing 92 in Pool 3.

But Jim Mallinder’s men have a good record in recent games at Saracens.

They won an Aviva Premiership play-off semi-final at Allianz Park in 2013 and the regular-season meeting at the same ground in November, 2014.

And Wood, who helped Saints claim a bonus-point win at Scarlets last Saturday, said: “It was great to qualify and give ourselves a chance.

“We don’t feel like we’ve been on our best form of late, but we do back ourselves on any given day.

“It gives us another opportunity to play Saracens, so that’s a bonus as well.

“You couldn’t draw a bad team and I don’t know what you would say is the easiest draw out of all of them.

“We’ve had some good days against Saracens in the past.

“They’re in brilliant form at the moment, but we know we can upset them if we’re at our best.

“We’ve done it in the past and we’ll look forward to that.”

Saints will travel to Saracens on the weekend of April 8-10.

But the venue is yet to be unknown, with Allianz Park, which holds approximately 10,000 people, not meeting the capacity requirements for a Champions Cup knock-out clash.

The ground must hold a minimum of 15,000, meaning unless Saracens can install temporary seating, they may have to play the tie at Wembley Stadium or another ground.
