Saints boss Jim Mallinder saw his son score the winning try

Academy product Harry Mallinder, who had made just two previous appearances for Saints, both of which came in the LV= Cup, dotted down in the final minute to earn a dramatic 19-15 win at Franklin’s Gardens.

It kept Northampton in the hunt for the Champions Cup quarter-finals, though they are likely to need a bonus-point success at Scarlets on Saturday to progress.

And though Mallinder wasn’t too keen to hype up his offspring, he did admit to being delighted.

“It’s about winning the game, to be honest,” said the director of rugby, when asked about Harry’s score.

“If you lose, you’re out of Europe - you win, and you’re still fighting.

“For this club, it’s a massive thing to do.

“For your son to score, I’m pretty chuffed.”

Saints, who had earlier scored through two lineout drives, with Teimana Harrison and Christian Day the men to profit, were 15-12 down going into the closing stages of the game.

But Glasgow, hampered by the sin-binning of Tim Swinson, were undone by fine play from Stephen Myler and George North, who combined to tee up 19-year-old Mallinder.

And Mallinder senior, who did joke that he would get Harry out in the garden after the game practising high balls after dropping one, said: “It was a tough game, wasn’t it?

“Glasgow came here and played well. It was a really spirited performance by them.

“They put us under pressure. They came to play, they’re good at offloading and they put us under pressure defensively.

“In attack, we weren’t as fluent as we could be, but we got there in the end, which is the important thing.”
