Gibson made 125 appearances for Saints after joining the club from Leicester Tigers in 2015.

But with Covid-19 having taken its toll on finances of rugby clubs, the renewal offer he was initially made before the pandemic became unavailable.

And fans have been having their say, taking to Twitter to express their views on Gibson leaving Franklin's Gardens.

Here's what some of them wrote...

@Nathann_09: Heartbroken for @JamieGibson6 a huge loss to the Saints setup. It just doesn’t seem fair, this pandemic has a lot to answer for. He has been standout for sometime now and for me unlucky to not have represented England. He won’t be short of offers here and overseas! Quality 6.

@dan_hayward87: Shocked. Pure class and underrated.

@MrsHolmes_NSG: Sounds like a £££ issue - but what a classy statement. We will miss him in ways we probably don't even realise yet.

@Brizzleman2: 110% professional, absolute credit to the club both on and off the pitch. Best wishes for whatever the future may be.

@robpurdie3: Great shame, one of those underrated players doing a lot of donkey work and always putting in a shift so others can shine. Think we are ok in that dept but he’s a top bloke to lose. Hope he gets a new opportunity soon - back to Tigers???

@StevePhillipsXV: Too good a player to let go, surely! #Gibson

@Simon153: Very sorry Jamie Gibson is leaving. It's a hard world for players without contracts at the moment. I know he has other interests but it would be a great shame for him to leave rugby.

@bennygodfrey: Real shame there. What a quality player to lose. There are others there that’s don’t hold a candle to Gibson IMO. He never gave anything away and was excellent in the loose and a turnover expert. Great front foot player. Little disappointed.

@maxdheaphy: This seems like a really bad decision. Presume this is a purely financial decision, given pandemic? He’s been one of our best players over the last few seasons.

@melm2j2: The Covid 19 effect on all clubs is clearly still evolving. Sad that @JamieGibson6 has become a ‘victim’ of those difficult decisions. All the very best to him and his family in the future, he never let the shirt down and fully deserved his POY award.
