Saints star Wood feeling 'fresher and friskier than ever' despite health scare

Chris Boyd says Tom Wood feels 'fresher and friskier than ever' despite his recent health scare.

Wood was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism in his lung last month having quickly headed to Northampton General Hospital for treatment.

It was initially announced that the 33-year-old would miss the rest of this season, which resumes with a game against Wasps at Franklin's Gardens on August 16.

But a recent club update stated that Wood, who is now free to resume non-contact training, could still play a part before the campaign concludes in October.

And when asked how Wood is feeling, Saints boss Boyd said: "He came into work for the first time again last Monday and he asked me whether we're ready to re-sign him again.

"He reckons he's fresher and friskier than he's ever been - he's just not allowed to take any contact.

"It's going to be a bit of a frustrating next little bit of time for him so he's going to have to make a contribution to the environment in a different way to playing.

"But he's been very good for us in a leadership role for us this year, and in a playing role.

"Unfortunately, he won't have that playing role for a little while, but he'll certainly still make a contribution to the environment."

So how worried were Saints about Wood?

"Potentially those things can have a nasty finish but they got on top of it pretty quickly," Boyd said.

"He recognised he had a problem and went off to the right people and got it sorted.

"He was a bit uncomfortable for a while but they've now got it under control.

"He can do mostly everything but he needs to minimise the chances of bleeding so he won't be doing any contact stuff.

"But he can run and do the gym and bits and pieces - he's just got to be careful in the woodwork shop!"
