A decision is set to be made in the coming days, with the French government considering whether its clubs should be allowed to play their remaining pool fixtures due to Covid-19 concerns.

There are two rounds remaining in the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup, with Saints due to host Leinster on January 15 before travelling to Bordeaux-Bègles on January 23.

Chris Boyd's side have seen their hopes of making the knockout stages hit by defeats to those two sides already.

And should they not be able to face them, it would mean they would not have played a game for more than a month when they step out to take on Gloucester in the Gallagher Premiership clash at Kingsholm on January 30.

Saints have seen their past two league matches, against London Irish and Leicester Tigers, cancelled due to Covid-19 outbreaks at Irish and at Franklin's Gardens.

And that means they could go to Gloucester having not played since the 29-10 Boxing Day win against Worcester Warriors should the Champions Cup not go ahead as planned.

European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) is 'expecting to receive a decision from the authorities in the next 48 hours'.
