Saints boss Boyd delivers injury update ahead of clash with London Irish

Chris Boyd does not expect Alex Coles to play again any time soon after the talented young lock suffered an ankle injury during the 34-21 defeat to Wasps on Sunday.

Coles was only on the field for 10 minutes after coming on in the 66th minute.

And it now looks like that could be his final action of a 2019/20 season that has seen him enjoy a real breakthrough at Franklin's Gardens.

"Alex Coles has got a high ankle sprain and this part of the season is probably done," Boyd said.

"He's had a scan, goes to a specialist this afternoon, but it's not looking terribly optimistic."

Harry Mallinder was due to face Wasps last Sunday after being named on the wing.

But he was forced to withdraw before the game, with Taqele Naiyaravoro taking his place in the starting 15.

"Harry Mallinder is probably not going to be available on Saturday," Boyd said.

"He might be ready for Bath but we're pretty well off in that space so we won't rush that."

As for other injuries, Boyd said: "Ollie Sleightholme's hamstring is still an issue and Alex Waller is obviously not back from his Achilles snap but we're not in too bad shape."

Tom Wood continues to take medication after being diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism.

And Boyd said: "He can't play while he's on medication because he can't afford to hemorrhage or take a blow.

"When he comes off that medication he can start playing again."
