Boyd's Saints braced for 'big challenge' against Wasps

When Saints marched to the Ricoh Arena in January, they did so knowing they would take on an out-of-sorts Wasps side.

A side struggling so much in fact that they had lost three of their previous four Gallagher Premiership matches.

And Saints added more salt to the wounds, snatching a dramatic late win thanks to Taqele Naiyaravoro’s typically powerful try.

Wasps had shown character in that clash, mounting a stirring second-half comeback that looked like it would give them the win.

But Saints showed better composure late on to take back the power and pick up the points they so desperately wanted.

Since then though, the fortunes of the two sides have gone in different directions.

Wasps won four of their next five league matches, while Saints were left picking up the pieces following a three-match Premiership losing streak.

They eventually got back on track on March 6, sealing a 16-10 win at Worcester Warriors.

But then the Covid-19 pandemic struck, calling a halt to rugby.

Now, more than five months on, rugby is ready to return.

And it will do so for Saints with a game against Wasps behind closed doors at Franklin’s Gardens this afternoon (kick-off 3pm).

Chris Boyd will be expecting the black, green and gold to hit the ground running after the break.

But the Kiwi boss knows Wasps will be no pushover thanks to the revival they have enjoyed since Lee Blackett took over from director of rugby Dai Young back in February.

Boyd said: “Wasps had difficulties through the front of the season but then they made changes and it seems to have worked for them.

“In the month before the season was halted they played particularly well and were on a roll.

“They’re pretty confident around their team’s roster.

“It’s going to be a tough game.

“It’s four versus five in the league table and to jump straight back on the horse is going to be a big challenge.”
