Finding a 'level of consistency' made 2020 a sporting year to remember for Kyren

While 2020 was a year most would like to forget, for sporting reasons it will be one to remember for Kyren Wilson.

Despite a dramatic change in how the world went about its business, the Kettering snooker star managed to maintain his upward curve throughout the calendar year.

He enjoyed a memorable run at the Crucible as he reached his first-ever World Championship final where he lost out to the great Ronnie O’Sullivan.

He did add another ranking title to his honours list when winning the Championship League and also reached his highest position in the world rankings so far when he hit the No.4 spot.

Wilson heads into The Masters this weekend as No.5 in the world and has been left to reflect on what was a positive calendar year in 2020.

“One thing I wanted to improve on was my level of consistency,” said Wilson, who celebrated his 29th birthday just before Christmas.

“I feel like I have made it to the quarter-finals or better of most of the events I have played in.

“There’s been the odd one where that hasn’t happened but it always feels like I am getting into the latter stages and heading towards the weekend of events.

“I am coming up against top class players who are beating me which is hard to take sometimes.

“But sometimes you have to put things into perspective and use everything as a learning curve.

“I try to learn from my losses more than my wins and you just hope that the next time you are put in that situation you have learned your lesson and you can adapt and deal with it better next time.

“I reached my highest ranking of world No.4 and that was a little bit of a target of mine, I am trying to edge up the rankings and, little by little, I am rising each year.

“Reaching the World final was a good achievement. I was disappointed not to win it but, again, I will learn the lessons from that.”
