Lawes has been in superb form since the start of the campaign, ramping it up in recent weeks to claim two man of the match prizes in the past three games.

The lock was labelled ‘the complete player’ by Saints boss Jim Mallinder after the Heineken Cup win over Ospreys on Sunday.

And after that game Lawes took time to explain just why his performances have been so good of late.

“It always has been about getting a run of games,” said the 24-year-old England star. “I’m staying fit and playing a lot smarter now, not trying to really hurt people.

“I’m looking after my shoulders and my body a bit more and it seems to be working.

“The fact that you’re not looking for it means most of the time it comes to you anyway and that’s something I’ve learned as I’ve got older, a bit more mature and a bit more experienced.

“I’m starting to enjoy my rugby and it’s starting to come a bit easier, which is nice.”
