Corby Town A moved to the top of the Kettering & District Table Tennis League’s Premier Division courtesy of a 9-1 victory over Westfield B.

Aiden Smith and Lee O’Boyle led the way, both maintaining their unbeaten records for the season.

O’Boyle was made to work hard for his treble, edging out Matthew Rushton (6-11, 11-8, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9) and then Scott Dixon (11-9, 11-13, 11-9, 16-14).

Smith’s treble was also hard-earned with fifth end victories over Dixon and Rushton after starting the night off with a 12-10, 13-11, 11-2 result against Steve Hobbs.

Henry Arthur added to Corby’s victory margin with wins over Rushton and Hobbs but he failed to match his team-mates’ achievements as Dixon recovered from two ends down and a 5-1 deficit in the deciding end to win 7-11, 8-11, 11-5, 13-11, 12-10.

Higham Band were knocked off the top when they succumbed to a 6-4 defeat to a strong Westfield A side that included Steve Silk for the first time.

Andy Trott made his second appearance of the season for Higham and dropped just one end as he recorded an expected treble though Silk caused him problems before going down.

Kevin Bird lost his unbeaten record when Trott beat him but won twice including an impressive 11-0, 11-5, 11-6 win over Andy Harrison.

With Silk also getting a double, Roumen Stefanov’s fifth-end victory over Mark Nannery ensured Westfield led going into the doubles and they wrapped up the win when Bird and Silk teamed up to beat Nannery and Harrison.

Burton Baptist A saw off Thrapston Eagles 7-3 to record their first win of the season.

Chris Ross was untroubled for his treble but Graham Ellson battled hard for Eagles to gain victories over Alex Aston and Dariusz Gulbicki.

Valdi Papiernik also got the better of Gulbicki but that was as good as it got for his side with Aston’s double and a solitary success for Gulbicki adding to Ross’ treble and a steady doubles win for Ross/Gulbicki saw the Baptists home.

Kettering A made it three wins from three with a comprehensive 9-1 victory over Thrapston SAS.

John Fuller and Carl Leeson were both undefeated for Kettering but Mike Hawes lost out as Mark Stockley gained Thrapston’s solitary point.

Stockley had lost out to Leeson 11-8 in the decider in the first match of the night before losing in 4 ends to Fuller.

Jacek Koltuniuk was the star man for Burton Baptist B, his hat-trick ensuring that his team returned home with a 5-5 draw against Harborough Athletic.

Asif Manji and Nash Hooda gained a win apiece for Burton but Barry Thompson (2), James Allington, Kevin Shield and a Shield/Thompson doubles win ensured parity.

Westfield C are the early leaders in Division One after their 6-4 win over Kites but it was the Thrapston side’s Paul Goodman who won all his three singles matches.

Tom Wildman and Paul Malpass each won twice for the Wellingborough team before combining to add the doubles.

Two trebles from Anthony Marray and two doubles from Nigel Payne helped Falcons to 6-4 wins over both Buccaneers and Corby C.

Buccaneers also lost to Burton C despite all of Tom Ravenscroft’s matches going to five ends, his only success coming with a 13-11 final end win over Chris Agg which secured the Rothwell team’s only point.

Derek Muggleton maintained his unbeaten start to the season with Steve Smith also recording a treble.

Liam Burnham hit his first treble of the season as Diamonds maintained their solid start to the season with a 7-3 win over Burton D. Darryl Sutcliffe won twice for Burton.

Three teams at Rothwell snatched victory at the death by winning their games 6-4 by virtue of securing their last three games in Division Two.

Ivor Jones’ treble for Comets was ably supported by Alan Brisley’s double in his first outing of the season, losing only to Dennis Millman, who only missed his second consecutive hat-trick when he lost to Jones in the fifth.

Jim Chatburn and Ann Woolston beat Pete Ainsworth, playing up, but Woolston needed the full distance to do so.

Against Exocets, James Young extended his unbeaten start to the season, losing only one end, but had to settle for a repeat of the 6-4 defeat of Baptist E’s first game.

Suzy Mills won Burton’s other point in a long match against Martin Bradford, who was also the player who stretched Young.

Will Ravenscroft won a double in his first match and he was equalled by Lauren Ainsworth before they paired up successfully in the doubles to take victory.

The final 6-4 was to the away team when Thrapston Hawks met Gladiators.

The returning Tony Yeomans won Gladiators first point of the season in beating Evie Elliott. He also beat Joe Kent but couldn’t match Alfie Wright who swept the board for his first treble. Lewis Patterson and Edward West got their seasons off the mark for Gladiators.

The longest match at Rothwell was the all-Rothborough clash as Dakotas beat Phantoms 8-2.

Kelvin Linnett worked hard for his four-point total, playing 18 ends and coming back from two down against Roger Powdrill, but the result wasn’t in doubt when Pete Rowbotham and Sean Smith, playing up, each got two, losing only to Ray Harrison, in another good display by him.

Corby D left Islip the victors thanks to another treble for Keith McLaren, and a pair each for Stewart Abraham and Andrew Dorrian, in his first game of the season.

Paul Blantern scored Harriers’ two points in their first defeat. He played in the only three matches that went the distance but couldn’t quite force the doubles with Mike Burrows as Abraham and McLaren saw the match out.
