Meghan misses out in the title defence

SARAH CARTER of Northampton is the 2012 County ladies champion after beating last year’s winner Meghan MacLaren (Wellingborough) by the scoreline 5&4 in the final at Overstone Park.

Although England international MacLaren went into the final as the favourite after qualifying for the knockout stages as the top seed, Carter produced an outstanding display to take the title.

Carter received a walkover win in the quarter finals, before reaching the final with a one-hole victory over Gillian Curley (Northants County).

MacLaren’s progress to the final followed an unusual path as she beat her mother Mary 6&4 in the last eight before overcoming her friend Rebecca Gee (Wellingborough) in the semi-final on the closing hole.

The Swannell Salver also witnessed a series of tight matches as Staverton’s Gemma Davies won two ties on the closing hole to reach the final.

She couldn’t make it a hat-trick of wins as Carter’s club colleague Lorraine Gilder clinched the honours with a 2&1 victory.
