Kettering’s Rod Handyside followed in the footsteps of his son Jon, who clinched the 2008 title, by lifting the NGU Higgs Bowl with a brilliant seven-under-par net 65 at Collingtree Park.
After a birdie on the opening hole, the five-handicapper dropped one shot at the seventh before picking up further strokes at the 11th and 15th holes to shoot a two-over-par gross score.
For most of a windy day, Giovanni Gioia (Oundle) looked set to grab the top prize after the 12-handicapper carded a birdie on the 18th hole to set the clubhouse lead on net 69.
Gioia had to settle for second, however, as he nudged one ahead of home club captain Chris Malton, who also finished with a birdie, and Oundle club-mate Sean Turner who carded three birdies in the first five holes.
With players only allowed to collect one prize, Bob Clayton (Cold Ashby) picked up the gross award thanks to a one-over-par 73. Adrian Firman (Peterborough Milton) was second on 74.
