Double delight for Rockingham team

Rockingham Forest Wheelers enjoyed a double celebration at the final round of the Northants CRA Spring Handicap Road Race Series with Ryan Henry claiming the day’s honours and Warren Drew taking the overall title.

Henry proved fastest in a 20-rider sprint after five laps of the six-mile Southwick circuit, coming through from an expanded scratch group who, asked to give seven minutes to the longmarkers, worked well to bring the race together shortly after half-distance.

Second place went to Richard Jones (Numplumz Mountainbikers) ahead of Michael Cowland (St Ives CC), Stephen Colbert (Renault Rotor Colbert RT) and Tim Smith (Wellland Valley CC) who earned enough points to climb to second place in the final standings.

David Langlands (Fenland Clarion CC) led in the rest of the finishers after breaking away on his own with a lap to go in a bold bid for victory, opening up a gap of around 30 seconds before reeled back in by the chasers.

Drew, 41, from Stanion, built his overall win – in his first season of road racing – on two earlier second places, holding off Smith by two points with Colbert a point further behind in third.

Fenland Clarion A emerged as overall winners of the inaugural team competition ahead of Rockingham Forest B and Welland Valley Green who tied for second.

A second series of five races begins on Saturday over three laps of the 10-mile Old circuit (2pm) and places in the field are available – contact Dave Birch at for details.
