The South African star began training at Franklin’s Gardens last Monday and made his debut against Gloucester on Friday night.

Matfield played the final 22 minutes in that 15-3 Aviva Premiership success, which came at a rain-soaked Gardens.

The 38-year-old added vital experience at a crucial time in the game, with the World Cup winner helping to steer Saints to victory.

And West was happy to have Matfield available for selection after the lock completed World Cup and Barbarians commitments.

“It (the English weather) is always a bit nasty but he’s been here for the past 10 weeks or so, so he’s seen a bit of it,” West said.

“He’s fitted in really well, he’s been a good addition to the squad and we’re looking forward to working with him.”

And when it was jokingly suggested that Matfield might turn out to be a good player, West said: “I’ve got a few bits and bobs I need him to sort out, but I’m sure he’ll be okay.”
