The 20-year-old fly-half stepped in for the injured Stephen Myler at Newcastle on Sunday and proceeded to pull the strings in a strong display.

Hooley racked up a total of 18 points, including an early try that set Saints on their way to a comprehensive 35-10 Aviva Premiership success.

And he is now looking to put more pressure on Myler as he builds on last season’s introduction to the first-team, which saw the Academy graduate make eight appearances.

“It’s a massive honour,” said Hooley, who made his Saints debut in the LV= Cup win against Saracens back in February.

“Pulling the Northampton No.10 shirt on is all I’ve wanted to do, especially coming through the Academy.

“I know it sounds a bit cliché but it really is.

“I just want to do myself proud, but the team proud most of all. We work hard in the week and off the back of a very successful year last year we want to do the same, if not better.

“It’s fantastic for me to get the opportunity and credit to Jim (Mallinder) and rest of the coaches for giving me the chance to go out there and do it.”
