Goffin too strong as Ward bows out at Wimbledon

Alex Ward's first experience of Wimbledon came to a swift end as he was beaten in straight sets by David Goffin.

The 25-year-old from Northamptonshire had been given a wild card to make his debut at SW19, but he found world number 11 Goffin too strong a proposition.

The Belgian took the first set 6-2 as the occasion seemed to get to Ward with his unforced error count proving high.

As he settled a little more he did produce some excellent moments of tennis and won some very good points.

However, the second set was lost 6-3 and third 6-2 as Ward’s brief time on court three came to a close.
