Youngsters will continue to get a chance at Poppies

The Poppies made a solid start to the new Evo-Stik Southern League Premier Division campaign at the weekend with a 2-0 success at Dorchester Town.

Law handed Nathan Bobowicz, a product of the club’s under-21 side, his full league debut and he was replaced in the game by another youngster Callum Westwood who went on to score the second goal after Liam Canavan’s classy finish had given the Poppies the lead.

Law insists part of his “remit” with the club as well as delivering a bid for promotion is to try to bring through young players into the first team.

And he is determined to continue giving the stars of tomorrow an opportunity to shine.

“The remit I have at the club is obviously trying to win promotion but I also have to be bringing players through for the future,” Law said.

“We have to give them that opportunity and it’s all about finding the right balance.

“We want to give them that experience to learn from but I have also got to keep myself in a job!

“But I am quite comfortable with the squad I had out there.”

The Poppies are now preparing for their first home league game of the season at Latimer Park tomorrow (Tuesday) night when they face a tough test against Leamington.

The Brakes were beaten 2-1 by Hungerford Town in last season’s play-off final and began the new campaign with a 3-1 home success over Cirencester Town.

“Leamington will be up there,” Law added.

“The league have given us the three other teams who were in the play-offs in the next three matches so we can look at those as a marker.

“But after our run-in last season, people will be looking at us and expecting things from us and we expect it from ourselves.

“It will be an interesting evening.”

Law, meanwhile, confirmed he expects full-back Liam Bateman to be “up for selection” tomorrow after he missed out at the weekend due to injury.
