Wright the happier manager as Steelmen stop the rot

The Steelmen had gone into the clash at The Lamb on the back of three successive defeats, which have left them rock-bottom of the Vanarama National League North.

However, Corby more than played their part against the play-off chasing hosts and had one of the best chances of the game when Greg Mills hit the post in the first half.

The draw wasn’t enough to lift the Steelmen off the foot of the table and they are now five points adrift of safety.

But Wright was full of praise for his team, especially young goalkeeper Sam Donkin and the defence as they preserved a welcome clean sheet.

“They probably had more chances in the first half but we had the best one because Millsy has missed one that was probably easier to score,” Wright said.

“The second half was more open and a bit end-to-end but the boys really stepped up and got us a good result.

“I think the we went home as the happier management team.

“If we had looked at the fixture list at the start of the season then a point at Tamworth would have been seen as a good result. And that’s how we have to look at it.

“We went there for three points but we have come away with one and a clean sheet and that was the most pleasing thing.

“I am delighted for young Sam and the whole back four. They have kept two clean sheets against Tamworth in the past few weeks and that’s a good effort.

“It was a day for them again and it was nice to see the boys in and around each other at the end of the game.”

Wright insists there is still a “big belief” within the squad that the Steelmen can get out of trouble.

And the manager, who named himself on the bench, is pleased to have plenty of competition for places for the run-in.

He added: “There is big belief, I think I have a dressing-room that is together. We are all fighting for the same cause. I still believe we will get out of it.

“I am looking at my bench and I have options. It’s a squad game and when these boys get their chance they have to take it.

“There will be some who will be frustrated but it’s good to have serious competition for places. It keeps everyone on their toes.”
