Wright hails '˜most complete performance' as Steelmen boost their survival hopes

First-half goals from Greg Mills and Edi Appleton secured a 2-0 success as the Steelmen won at home for the first time since November 7.

Having started the day propping up the Vanarama National League North table, Corby ended it out of the relegation zone after other results went firmly in their favour.

The victory came after a couple of weeks of inactivity after last weekend’s clash at Bradford Park Avenue was postponed.

And boss Wright, who handed debuts to recent signings Ellis Myles, Nathan Hicks, who was sent off for two bookable offences in the second half, and Nathan Evans, admitted the enforced break may well have suited his team.

“That was probably the most complete performance from start to finish that I think we have had all season,” the Steelmen boss said.

“We have had a lot of time on the training field because we haven’t been playing games, there have been fresh faces who have been brought into the club and have really brought into our ideas.

“They have gone on the pitch and delivered it and I couldn’t be any prouder of them.

“I said I was more than happy to sit back and watch everyone else play.

“Everyone had games in hand on us and now we have a clearer idea of what we need to do, if we needed reminding.

“The break gave us a chance to have a look at Tamworth last weekend and gave us a chance to work even harder on our weaknesses and I think that paid dividends.”

Wright, meanwhile, revealed his half-time team talk included a quick reminder to his players of what happened in the FA Trophy match with Tamworth earlier in the season when the visitors scored five goals in the last 18 minutes to complete a 6-2 victory.

He added: “I read out the match report from the FA Trophy game that was written, in terms of how embarrassing our performance was for the last 18 minutes.

“And I think it focused the boys a little bit. But I don’t think we ever really looked like conceding.

“They hit the woodwork in the first half and we went up the other end and scored.

“But we hit the woodwork and Millsy has missed a sitter and we could have scored five or six. I am absolutely delighted with the boys and they thoroughly deserved the clean sheet.”
