Winning start a welcome boost for Steelmen, says Wright
Tommy Wright believes Corby Town's winning start to pre-season will give his new-look squad a big boost in confidence.
The Steelmen beat United Counties League Premier Division side Eynesbury Rovers 2-1 on the 3G surface at Montsaye Academy in Rothwell last night (Tuesday).
Brad Lee Gascoigne opened the scoring with a header before Eynesbury levelled soon after.
However, second-half substitute Michael Ogilvie grabbed the winner for Wright’s men.
And the Corby boss believes the victory was important for everyone at the club as they build up towards the start of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division campaign on August 13.
“I think the win was an important one off the back of a very disappointing season,” he said.
“There were plenty of fans who came out to watch it and it was important for them to see this fresh squad get a win and it will do good things for the players’ confidence as well.
“The plans were thrown up in the air a bit because Jamie Anton had to pull out during the warm up as he has been struggling with a throat infection.
“But there were some good performances from the likes of Brad Lee Gascoigne and I thought Liam Marshall was superb all evening for us.
“The surface didn’t make it easy but it was a case of either playing it there or not at all and I still think it was a very worthwhile exercise for us.”
Corby return to friendly action on Saturday when they head to Rothwell Corinthians.
